Charles, a musicologist, has cloistered himself off from romantic entanglements. He keeps himself occupied with his work, his casual friendships, and visits from his mother.

When Isabel, a brokenhearted poet, moves into the apartment next door, she has only her father for company. Charles and Isabel meet and Charles does his best to not fall in love with her.
